400.
I got lost in a corn field with the girl I am in love with. We laughed as we retraced our steps over and over again, trying to follow the setting sun. Our view was obstructed by the tall husks of corn, our arms and legs sported scratches from the leaves but we harldy noticed. She was beautiful. Her golden hair tumbled down her back as she ran ahead of me, her summer skin catching the light just right. She’d stop abruptly and ask me if I thought we were going the right way. I always just shrugged and smirked as she waited for an answer. “We’re definitely lost” she’d say and I agreed. Secretly though, I felt more lost in her big hazel eyes than the field. She panted as she tried to catch her breath, giggling at the sounds she was making. Collapsing on the ground in a heap of gold and violet, she looked up at me and asked me to tell her a story. I slowly sat in front of her and watched her eyes watching me. There was only one story I wanted to tell her. I told her the story about us. How before I had met her, I was a mess. I was involved with the wrong people, I found fulfillment in material things, I disrespected the people that cared about me. But then she came along and changed me. She took my hand and assured me that change wasn’t some abstract idea that could never be obtained.
She smiled as she listened, her teeth hiding beneath her lips. I wanted to kiss her but I pushed that thought away. We had been together for almost fourteen months and, so far, we had promised each other that we wouldn’t base our relationship on the physical aspect. I can tell you that it was difficult at first, especially considering how quickly I would kiss girlfriends in the past, yet somehow I knew it would be worth the wait. To have been dating for almost fourteen months and yet still have not brushed my lips with hers is something I never thought I would be capable of. I smiled in return as I told her that I loved her. She tucked her hair behind her ears and then hugged her knees as she looked up at the evening sky. I watched her gaze up at the magnificent colours - she was completely lost in the shades and I knew it. She had always been a dreamer.
Thank you for changing me, pretty girl.
